Digitalis purpurea

Foxgloves are one of the most magical plants in the garden. Beautiful bell shaped flowers bloom on tall stems that pollinators love. Bumblebees can often be found buzzing through the blooms. This blend includes shades of peach, apricot, lavender white and magenta.

Please note: All parts of this flowering plant are poisonous, including the seeds. Use caution around children and pets.

Plant spacing: 9-12 in
Germination rate: 98%
Seeds per packet: 100
Seed origin: Ontario, Canada

How to grow
First year flowering. Start seeds indoors 10 to 12 weeks before your last frost date. Seeds require light to germinate. Bottom water until seedlings emerge as seeds very tiny. Foxgloves are cold tolerant and seedlings can be planted out 3-4 weeks before your last frost date provided they are covered during cold nights. Seedlings can also be planted after your last frost date.

How to harvest
Harvest when the lower 1/3 of flowers on a spike have opened and before bees pollinate as blooms will drop. Deadheading encourages plants to re-bloom.

Care & Growing

Site: full sun
Planting depth: 4-6 in
Plant spacing: 12-18 in
Pinch: 12 inches
Days to maturity: 80-100 days
Planting: plant once soil has warmed up in late spring. Plant at a depth of 4 to 6 inches. Dahlias need space to develop, plant 12 to 18 inches apart. Do not water until leaves have emerged from the ground. Pinch plants once they've reached 12 inches tall to encourage branching and more blooms. Fertilize regularly throughout the season.

Harvesting: cut when blooms are almost fully open, about 3/4 of the way and before petals at the back become papery. Cut deep to encourage taller stems. Dahlias have a vase life of 5 days with daily water change and when kept away from sunlight.
Every dahlia purchase comes with a detailed care & planting instruction card from our farm.
