Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting outdoors. Harden off and transplant outdoors with the late frosts in the spring. Sweet peas can tolerate light frosts. Seeds can also be direct sown in the ground in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Pinch seedlings when 6 inches tall to encourage branching. Sweet pea vines need support and a trellis is required.

Harvesting

Harvest sweet peas when 1 to 3 blooms on the cluster have opened leaving a few unopened buds at the top. For longer stems, sweet peas can be cut down the vine.
