Lathyrus sativus

Bright blue blooms add uniqueness and textural feel to arrangements. Stems on flowers are fairly short however full vining stems can be cut long and tucked into floral arrangements to add shape and movement.

Planting depth: ¼ in
Plant spacing: 6 in
Seeds per packet: 10
Seed origin: Ontario, Canada

How to grow
Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting outdoors. Harden off and transplant outdoors with the late frosts in the spring. Sweet peas can tolerate light frosts. Seeds can also be direct sown in the ground in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Pinch seedlings when 6 inches tall to encourage branching. Sweet pea vines need support and a trellis is required.

How to harvest
Harvest sweet peas when 1 to 3 blooms on the cluster have opened leaving a few unopened buds at the top. For longer stems, harvest full vining stem.

Care & Growing

Site: full sun
Planting depth: 4-6 in
Plant spacing: 12-18 in
Pinch: 12 inches
Days to maturity: 80-100 days
Planting: plant once soil has warmed up in late spring. Plant at a depth of 4 to 6 inches. Dahlias need space to develop, plant 12 to 18 inches apart. Do not water until leaves have emerged from the ground. Pinch plants once they've reached 12 inches tall to encourage branching and more blooms. Fertilize regularly throughout the season.

Harvesting: cut when blooms are almost fully open, about 3/4 of the way and before petals at the back become papery. Cut deep to encourage taller stems. Dahlias have a vase life of 5 days with daily water change and when kept away from sunlight.
Every dahlia purchase comes with a detailed care & planting instruction card from our farm.
